A Whole New World Opens with Yacht Ownership

Monday, June 23rd, 2008

Yacht Ownership opens a whole new world to the Owner and his family. Here are some tips on making the experience enjoyable from the beginning:

 1. Find a Yacht Broker you are comfortable with. A good Broker listens to you and provides all the necessary  information for you to make an educated and informed decision. Your broker should also have access to every  aspect of the industry from what yachts are available, crew hiring, ship yards, surveyors, customs etc. The  broker should be with you throughout your entire yachting career as an advisor.

 2. Hire a Captain you are comfortable with. The Captain is the manager of your yacht. The captain should be  proficient in budgets, project management, crew management and have the ability to make your experience  completely enjoyable.

 3. Upon closing on your yacht and taking possession we advise not make wholesale changes from day one to the  yachts interior or design. Enjoy the yacht for six months to a year before making major changes. Often it is  the case where a new owner finds that changes are not always necessary as was first envisioned.

 4. Budgets are always necessary. When the yacht goes into the shipyard the appropriate experts should be  consulted to prepare a budget and discuss your expectations with the shipyard prior to any work beginning.

On occasion a Buyer cannot locate the perfect yacht for his tastes or desires. This Owner has the option to build the perfect yacht. Over the years, yacht brokers of Northrop and Johnson, have found that many Owners who choose to build enjoy that process and experience so much that they will take on a second and third project immediately after taking delivery.

The joys of yacht ownership are about the experience, the service and the worldwide adventures that come with ownership. Vist www.njyachting.com or call 978.921.6600 for more info on the lifestyle you deserve.

Northrop and Johnson – Worldwide yacht brokerage and new construction

Friday, May 30th, 2008

New yacht construction projects continue worldwide.  Dutch and German yards are at their maximum and have been for several years.  Yards in mainland China are starting to market products equal to and in some cases exceeding that of Dutch builds.

Steve Doyle, yacht broker of Northrop and Johnson Boston office has a sailboat under construction in Vancouver.  The design is based on simplicity and performance.  Steve’s client wants a blue water sailing yacht that is fast and could undergo repair while at sea or anywhere in the world.  With this particular design by marine architect Ivan Erdevicki, repairs are made to be simple.  This 120’ sailing yacht is being constructed in aluminum.

Steve has yet another client who loves the design and is in the process of having the architect provide drawings for a 130’ sailboat which the client wants constructed in composites.  For more information please call 978.921.6600.

Price upon completion is approximately $12 million USD.

The Bucket – a luxury sailboat regatta

Friday, May 23rd, 2008

The Bucket, organized by Northrop and Johnson Rhode Island, is a luxury sailboat regatta which takes place in St. Barths in the Caribbean Islands to attract enthusiasts with sailing yachts that are not necessarily designed for racing. Attendance was 27 super sailing yachts and 600 crew. MY Sovereign, a Northrop and Johnson charter vessel, participated on the first day as a committee yacht.

The weekend of March 27 – March 30 found 27 luxury sailing yachts from around the world in St. Barths participating in the “Bucket”. The bucket is a sailboat regatta designed to attract sailing enthusiasts with sailing yachts that are not necessarily designed for racing. With 27 super yachts and 600 crew in attendance, the regatta provided the normally tranquil Caribbean Island with a level of excitement seen only once per year. The regatta was one of the most exciting races of the decade. All three days of racing had perfect weather. After the first day of racing all of the super sailing yachts lined up at the dock and welcomed all the bucket participants to a yacht hop. Attendees were welcomed onboard every yacht for cocktails and hors d’oeuvres. Day two of the race welcomed owners of the magnificent sailing yachts to a reception which featured an auction. The auction raised $200,000.00 dollars for the local hospital. The attendees were treated to a surprise concert by long time bucket supporter, Jimmy Buffett. Day three of the race concluded with awards ceremony. On July 18 – July 20, the bucket moves to Newport, Rhode Island. Special thanks to Hank Halstead and Lisa O’Connell of the Northrop and Johnson Rhode Island office and all who assisted in organizing this exciting event. Also, a special thanks to Mr. & Mrs. Mitchell and family for the use of their yacht, MY Sovereign. A History of Northrop & Johnson - A First in Yachting!

Tuesday, January 8th, 2008

Shortly after World War II, Jim Northrop and George Johnson formed a partnership to provide quality yacht brokerage service to their close circle of yachting companions on Long Island Sound. The first office opened in 1949 at 366 Madison Avenue in lower Manhattan and served as the foundation for the fledgling brokerage that was soon to expand into one of the largest and most respected yacht brokerages in the world. Northrop and Johnson’s Yankee heritage was reflected in the company’s reputation for honesty, integrity and fair play.Northrop and Johnson’s reputation as the “Gentlemen Brokers” spread quickly in the tightly knit New York yachting community and by the early 1960s the company expanded with branch offices in Stamford, Connecticut, Miami, Florida and Marblehead, Massachusetts. In 1971 Kees Van Vliet opened the first US Yacht Brokerage office in Europe in Cannes, France. By the late 1970s there were additional offices in Newport, Rhode Island, Puerto Buenos, Spain and Saint Petersburg, Florida.

During the 70s and 80s Northrop and Johnson became the premier large yacht brokerage in the United States. Many of the industry’s most recognizable names began their careers at Northrop and Johnson. Today Northrop and Johnson is recognized at every major yachting venue throughout the world.
