Shop for a Yacht Broker, then a yacht

Tuesday, June 17th, 2008

As you begin your journey in the world of yacht ownership or to charter a yacht, it is easy to get lost in the quest to find the ultimate yacht.  From website to website, location to location, you risk losing countless hours of your time and being misled by inaccruate information. There is an alternative available, shop for a yacht broker first and then shop for a yacht.

An experienced professional yacht broker understands that his role is to communicate with you, listen to your needs, utilize his experience and industry networking skills and the resources offered by his company to provide you with a comprehensive flow of information.  The professional yacht broker is not a salesman and should not be trying to sell you on any particular yacht. He is your advocate and his job is to find the right yacht for you at the best possible terms.

A broker’s business is yachts.  His success depends on establishing long-term relationships with his clients.  Therefore, a broker must put the interests of his client first and guide him to the correct end result.  Clients can take great comfort knowing the transaction and personal details are kept confidential.  At Northrop and Johnson of Massachusetts, our brokers assist with the many details surrounding the purchase.

Most commonly asked question – why purchase a yacht?

Tuesday, June 10th, 2008

As a yacht broker with Northrop and Johnson of Massachusetts, Eric Ciambra enjoys a professional environment supported by a more than efficient infrastructure that allows him to give a client the best possible service wherever they are located.

In Eric’s travels worldwide, the most common question he gets as a yacht broker is “why does somebody buy a 100 foot plus yacht and not just rent it when they need it?”

It’s a fair question.  After all, with yacht ownership comes expense as well as ongoing capital outlay.  It goes without saying pride of yacht ownership is a huge factor.  Historically, most owners start off chartering a yacht and then become owners.  It allows them to see if they enjoy the lifestyle.  It permits them to test different types of vessels in different environments.  It allows them to test crew and cultivate a certain amount of buyer experience and comfort.

After a certain amount of time and certainly a lot of expenditure, ownership (for those who value the lifestyle) becomes the natural next step.

So, Eric asked a yacht owner who is a very successful CEO of a company why he owns a yacht.  His answer was because of his often busy schedule, it was the only location that he had discovered where he could truly spend quality time with his family and friends.  This gave Eric an insight as to why so many yacht owners have so much affection for their chosen yacht.

To those who asked that question or are thinking of asking it, Eric is hopeful this has been useful.

Yachting – A luxury and lifestyle

Thursday, June 5th, 2008

Over the years, yacht brokers of the Northrop and Johnson office of Boston, have travelled and sold yachts to clients worldwide. Yachting is a lifestyle. The asset, a yacht, is a small part of that lifestyle.

Yachting is filled with adventure, relaxation and bonding with family and friends. If you would enjoy scuba diving in Tahiti, surfing in Australia, fishing in Cabo, sightseeing at Glacier National park in Alaska or relaxing on a sandy beach anywhere in the world than you will enjoy yachting. If you enjoy exotic culinary feasts, six star service and total control of your environment than you will enjoy yachting.

Yachting has also been the venue for many successful business relationships and meetings. Our brokers have been a part of organizing business events on yachts that have seen a 15% increase in productivity by a restaurant chain, an increase in business closings of 40% for a service company involved with jets worldwide and the raising of millions of dollars for charity.

Some yacht owners have had bad experiences with yachting, due largely in part, on the relationship with crew.  On occasion the Captain has found it appropriate to treat the yacht as his own and the owner as a guest. Yacht brokers of the Northrop and Johnson office of Massachusetts offer complete yachting concierge service.  We provide complete  information about a yacht or yachts so the client is able to make the best decision possible for their purchase.   We not only assist our clients in locating the perfect yacht to suit their needs, we also assist our clients in finding crew who would be best suitable for the job. We refer the client to legal services, insurance and documentation services available to assure a smooth and efficient transaction. Once our client becomes a yacht owner we continue dialogue with the client and Captain to ensure yacht ownership meets our client’s expectations.

Our company has been in business since 1956. Brokers and staff of the Northrop and Johnson Boston office have had experiences worldwide with every aspect of yachting.  This includes working closely with shipyards on a new construction, yacht transport, yacht management, to yacht charters and provisioning.  Our 52 years of knowledge and experience are used to assist our clients in making every aspect of their yachting experience an enjoyable lifestyle.

Northrop and Johnson - Period of tremendous growth in the yachting industry

Monday, May 26th, 2008

Northrop and Johnson is experiencing a period of tremendous growth in yacht sales, charters and partnerships in and around the yachting industry. From Dubai, to Moscow, Shanghai, to Vancouver and of course, to the good old USA, you will find Northrop and Johnson yacht brokers and affiliates worldwide.

The Boston office of Northrop and Johnson has created a strategic alliance with a jet charter company in Moscow. The jet company is marketing sales and charters of yachts for Northrop and Johnson in Russia. George Georges and Peter Griffin from the Boston office and Ann Avery of the Fort Lauderdale attended the Moscow Boat Show in April and reported the potential for a successful partnership between Boston and Moscow appears to be a promising relationship. The Fort Lauderdale office has hired several yacht brokers in the San Diego area and is opening an office in Southern California. We are pleased to welcome David Roscow and Greg Morton, who bring many years of experience in the yachting industry. They also will have support staff to man the new Northrop and Johnson office of Southern California. Northrop and Johnson ownership has recently granted a license to operate under the Northrop and Johnson banner to a company in Palma Mallorca, Spain. The office in Spain also represents Nautor Swan. A yacht broker from our Rhode Island office, Fred Trombley, has requested a license to operate a Northrop and Johnson office in Dubai. Fred has been with Northrop and Johnson for almost a decade. Fred attended the recent Dubai Boat Show, along with Steve and Paula Doyle of the Boston office and Russell Nelson out of London. Northrop and Johnson witnessed firsthand the potential for growth in that region. The Northrop and Johnson holding company has recently hired Barbara Tierney to fill the position of Managing Director. Barb brings her expertise in the yachting industry to the company and for a slight change will manage the day to day operation of the parent company.

Barb’s tasks also include reorganization of the infrastructure, managing the boat show. She is also in the process of planning and creating a whole new company wide ad campaign.

The Bucket – a luxury sailboat regatta

Friday, May 23rd, 2008

The Bucket, organized by Northrop and Johnson Rhode Island, is a luxury sailboat regatta which takes place in St. Barths in the Caribbean Islands to attract enthusiasts with sailing yachts that are not necessarily designed for racing. Attendance was 27 super sailing yachts and 600 crew. MY Sovereign, a Northrop and Johnson charter vessel, participated on the first day as a committee yacht.

The weekend of March 27 – March 30 found 27 luxury sailing yachts from around the world in St. Barths participating in the “Bucket”. The bucket is a sailboat regatta designed to attract sailing enthusiasts with sailing yachts that are not necessarily designed for racing. With 27 super yachts and 600 crew in attendance, the regatta provided the normally tranquil Caribbean Island with a level of excitement seen only once per year. The regatta was one of the most exciting races of the decade. All three days of racing had perfect weather. After the first day of racing all of the super sailing yachts lined up at the dock and welcomed all the bucket participants to a yacht hop. Attendees were welcomed onboard every yacht for cocktails and hors d’oeuvres. Day two of the race welcomed owners of the magnificent sailing yachts to a reception which featured an auction. The auction raised $200,000.00 dollars for the local hospital. The attendees were treated to a surprise concert by long time bucket supporter, Jimmy Buffett. Day three of the race concluded with awards ceremony. On July 18 – July 20, the bucket moves to Newport, Rhode Island. Special thanks to Hank Halstead and Lisa O’Connell of the Northrop and Johnson Rhode Island office and all who assisted in organizing this exciting event. Also, a special thanks to Mr. & Mrs. Mitchell and family for the use of their yacht, MY Sovereign. Photos taken of 2007 regatta by yacht photographer Billy Black may be viewed at http://www.bucketregatta.com.

A History of Northrop & Johnson - A First in Yachting!

Tuesday, January 8th, 2008

Shortly after World War II, Jim Northrop and George Johnson formed a partnership to provide quality yacht brokerage service to their close circle of yachting companions on Long Island Sound. The first office opened in 1949 at 366 Madison Avenue in lower Manhattan and served as the foundation for the fledgling brokerage that was soon to expand into one of the largest and most respected yacht brokerages in the world. Northrop and Johnson’s Yankee heritage was reflected in the company’s reputation for honesty, integrity and fair play.Northrop and Johnson’s reputation as the “Gentlemen Brokers” spread quickly in the tightly knit New York yachting community and by the early 1960s the company expanded with branch offices in Stamford, Connecticut, Miami, Florida and Marblehead, Massachusetts. In 1971 Kees Van Vliet opened the first US Yacht Brokerage office in Europe in Cannes, France. By the late 1970s there were additional offices in Newport, Rhode Island, Puerto Buenos, Spain and Saint Petersburg, Florida.

During the 70s and 80s Northrop and Johnson became the premier large yacht brokerage in the United States. Many of the industry’s most recognizable names began their careers at Northrop and Johnson. Today Northrop and Johnson is recognized at every major yachting venue throughout the world.
